PROGRAM DESCRIPTION, SUMMARY AND OUTLINE
7.5 CEU's Program Description The issue of Domestic Violence has been a part of the political and social agenda here in the United States for the past 30 years. It is not an issue of just men battering women. There is same gender domestic violence and violence against men. This workshop examines and defines domestic violence from a traditional and non-traditional perspective. The workshop identifies the perpetrators and the victim, and the survivor. Offered with a clinical slant, this workshop examines treatment issues, etiologies, and identification of abuse, demographics and treatment implications. This is a very pragmatic workshop, which looks at specific interventions that work. Issues such as personal protection orders, escape plans, signs of violence, the cycle of violence will all be covered in this sensitive yet informative seminar.
Educational Objectives:
- Participants will become familiar with the signs of domestic violence.
- Participants will become familiar with the traits of the victims & perpetrators.
- Participants will be able to identify the cycle of violence and it's implications to domestic violence.
- Clinicians will learn to help clients develop personal protection plans.
- Clinicians will demonstrate a working knowledge verbal and non-verbal symptoms of domestic violence.
- Clinicians will learn multiple treatment strategies and options to employ.
- Clinicians will learn the legal issues associated domestic violence.
- Clinicians will learn to identify the highest risk factors associated with domestic violence.
- Clinicians will learn to address questions to get valid information.
- Clinicians will learn specific variables associated with adolescent and elder abuse.
- Understand the role of culture, race, religion and sexual orientation in domestic violence.

Today clinicians are confronted with many clients who face issues of domestic violence on a daily basis. Fact is, every 18 seconds someone in the United States is the victim of domestic violence.
Domestic violence affects everyone regardless of race, color, creed, gender or sexual orientation. This is not a phenomenon only limited to women, heterosexuals, the poor, the uneducated or the non-professional. Domestic violence is common against men by women, same gender partners, in the "well to do" and the highly educated. Many victims are silent about their plight because of embarrassment or fear of retaliation. The clinician attending this workshop will:
- Learn who the victims are!
- Learn who the perpetrators are!
- Be able to identify signs and symptoms of domestic violence.
- Be able to identify the traits of the victims & perpetrators
- Be able to understand the cycle of violence and it's application
- Learn to help clients develop "Personal Protection Plans"
