PROGRAM DESCRIPTION, SUMMARY AND OUTLINE
Personality disorders have been a source of anguish for the mental health community for many years. The treatment community has faced the dilemma of attempting to make a differential diagnosis in light of the fact that for every axis II disorder, there are one or more axis I disorders that look very much alike. In fact the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals over the years have been attempting to control for the amount of overlap between the diagnoses to bring more clarity to the diagnostic process. This has been done with only marginal success.
With managed care often not paying for the treatment of most personality disorders, clinicians tend to be drawn to the axis I disorders to explain the client's pathology. This may result in a continuation of the problem and increase the client's sense of helplessness and hopelessness. Unfortunately, the treatment of personality or characterological defect is a specialized area that requires greater diagnostic and intervention expertise to successfully ameliorate or resolve the problem.
Most clinicians assess clients without the benefits of formalized diagnostic testing such as the MMPI-II or similar tests. Clinicians need information that will help them to determine the presence of a personality disorder or to differentiate between them. This workshop is designed to provide clinicians with the information that will help them to make this critical determination. Making an appropriate diagnosis, allows for quicker relief and healthier behaviors for the client.
