PROGRAM DESCRIPTION, SUMMARY AND OUTLINE
The incidence of substance abuse with licit and illicit drugs has skyrocketed over the past 20 years causing a national crisis. The consequences and costs associated with it have permeated society at every level.
Clinicians, regardless of area of practice, are required to deal with the effects of its use on individuals, groups, and community systems daily. Despite the prevalence of substance abuse in our society, little formal training is afforded clinicians in building a knowledge base about substances of abuse to further their practice skills. An understanding of the actions and patterns of abuse is essential in effective clinical practice.
The seminar will enable participants to:
- Become familiar with the many substances of abuse.
- Understand basic pharmacological actions of specific substances.
- Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of specific substances of abuse.
- Learn mechanisms by which drugs work.
- Explore the role of substance abuse in the development of psychiatric and physical disorders.
- Learn behavioral indicators of dependence and abuse.
- Explore the use of different treatment modalities and philosophies with substance abuse.
