On-line Course: Coming Soon PROGRAM DESCRIPTION, SUMMARY AND OUTLINE
The incidence of suicide is up over 800% over the last 10 years and appears to be climbing at incredible rates. Every 18 minutes, someone in the United States commits suicide. There are over 5,000 suicides of 5 to 14 year olds every year.
Clinicians need to be equipped to identify those at risk of suicide and be competent in interventions that will create safety for the client. This workshop examines who commits suicide, the 5 stages of suicide, the suicide assessment, actual interventions that work and the importance of using our humanity in a non-judgmental, caring and empathetic way that helps clients find a reason to want to live.
Clinicians will learn the art of the question, how to ask the suicide question in a manner that gets valid responses. Legal and ethical considerations and the establishment of standards of practice around suicide will all be presented in this seminar.
Educational Objectives:
1. Participants will become familiar with the history of suicide since the beginning of recorded history including issues of the role of religion, law and clinical practice.
2. Participants will learn the numerous etiologies of suicide.
3. Participants will be able to identify what a "standard practice" is, it's importance and how to establish one.
4. Clinicians will learn to discern the different treatment concerns if the clinician on an inpatient versus outpatient basis.
5. Clinicians will demonstrate a working knowledge of the role medication and psychobiology as it related to Suicidality.
6. Clinicians will learn multiple treatment strategies and options to employ on an outpatient vs. inpatient basis.
7. Clinicians will learn the legal issues associated with treating the suicidal client including, confidentiality, negligence, foreseeability, and acts of omission.
8. Clinicians will learn to identify the highest risk factors and most common symptoms associated with suicide.
9. Clinicians will be able to apply Kubler-Ross' Stages of Death and Dying to the suicidal client as a way to determine where the client is in the suicide continuum.
