The purpose of this workshop is to assist participants in understanding and using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV TR in their every-day practice as it relates to the assessment and treatment planning process with children and adolescents. A thorough review of how to make a five-axis diagnosis, and its relationship to clinical care will be provided through lecture, experiential exercises and actual patient videos.

Clinicians often limit their options by using criteria sets only found in the childhood disorders section of the DSM. This can be a serious mistake. Children have adult disorders just as adults have childhood disorders. The importance of making an accurate diagnosis cannot be understated. Get the tools necessary to make an accurate diagnosis.

By Attending This Workshop Participants Will:

  • Understand the changes in the DSM IV TR as they relate to children and adolescents
  • Become familiar with the history, workings and rationale of the DSM IV TR
  • Be familiar with terms the DSM IVTR uses.
  • Understand the role of cultural dynamics in the diagnostic process
  • Have a clear understanding of each of the five axes and how to use them
  • Demonstrate an initial level of competence in formulating a diagnosis
  • Be familiar with each of the major diagnostic categories for children & adolescents
  • Learn to use DSM IV TR Decision Trees
